MIT’s _docubase showcases innovative documentary

Docubase 02Prepare to go down a wormhole of social-justice storytelling. The MIT Open Documentary Lab has launched a beta version of _docubase, a website featuring profiles of and links to more than 150 documentary projects from around the world — films, interactive websites, oral history programs, transmedia projects, mobile apps and other innovative forms to push the boundaries of documentary storytelling. Many of the projects concern social issues, and even those that don’t nevertheless tell stories in ways that might be instructive for social-justice activists and media-makers.

One of the featured projects is Memory Traces (pictured above), oral histories of Italian Americans in Boston, presented on a beautiful online interface in map or list layouts. Another profile is of “Defector: Escape from North Korea,” an interactive online documentary.
